Summer Classes
Started in 2009
While many groups organize arts and crafts classes for children during the summer, we at Udhavum Ullangal want to address the multiple needs and skills from which underprivileged children can benefit. We arrange one month of special classes during the summer holidays as a means of doing this.
Average number of children attending each class:40
Age group of the children:6th – 12th standard
Timings:9 AM to 12 noon, 5 days a week (Thursdays and Fridays off)
Venue:T-Nagar Girls’ High School
Through the summer classes we help the children with:
- Spoken English
- Vedic Maths (offering new approaches to mathematics - e.g. a quick way to multiply 3 digit numbers)
- Basic computer proficiency
- Public speaking
- Personality development
We also…
- Share important values with the children
- Entertain them with stories
- Engage them with arts and crafts
- Arrange fun outings to educate them. Examples of these are:
- A trip to Dakshinachitra for the children to experience art and culture.
- A tour of the Modern Bread factory in Taramani, for the children to learn how bread is made. After the tour, the children receive free bread to sample
- A visit to a bank for the children to understand its working
- A trip to Voluntary Health Service, Taramani, to teach children about blood grouping. Each child can then learn what blood group they are
Feeding the children
In addition to the classes and the opportunity to interact with each other, we also provide breakfast.
