School-to-School Programme
Started in 2007
A chance to see the world in a different way
This programme serves to encourage interaction between underprivileged children and children from more privileged schools, thereby setting the stage for each group to see life from a different perspective.
Two such interactions have been organized between Sankara Vidyashram, Thiruvanmiyur and both Venkateswara Middle School in Chrompet and AVVAI Homes - a school-cum-orphanage in Adayar.
An exchange of ideas and experiences
From the very first interaction, what struck us was how easily the children mingled with each other, sharing experiences and stories. There was a sense of curiosity and excitement as each less privileged child exposed his/her more privileged counterparts to the hardships that life can hold, and in turn learnt new ways of thinking and problem solving.
After each interaction stationary such as note books, pencils, etc., and school bags are distributed, and there is a short entertainment programme.
Adopting a friend
Our ultimate goal is for the children to establish strong bonds with each other, with each privileged child ‘adopting’ a child from a poorer background, i.e. helping them in small ways both financially and emotionally.
For example, in one of the schools we have worked with, a young girl who was chosen to travel to Delhi and participate in a singing competition was gifted a new outfit by a friend as she could not afford one herself. It is just such spontaneous compassion that we want to encourage.
