Constructing toilets for a school in Chrompet

Total budget: Rs.1.2 lakh

Sri Venkateswara Middle School is an ‘aided’ school, so the government pays the teachers’ salaries but the local residents have to maintain the infrastructure.

An unhealthy environment for children

The 1st to 5th standards are built on a good plot of land in a well-populated area, but classrooms for the 6th standard and above are located on another, less desirable campus. Unfortunately this campus has no toilets, so its students use the surrounding areas to relieve themselves.

Added to this, the adjoining plot is a public dump where garbage is burnt every day. The resulting smoke regularly blows into the school creating an unhealthy environment for the children.

Showing the children that they are important

With the support of Focus India Forum, an NGO in Singapore, we built 4 toilets for Venkateswara Middle School, as well as open urinals for boys. Building these toilets is a small, yet important step in helping the children with their education, and showing them that their community cares about their well-being.
