Tirupulivanam School Project
Tirupulivanam School Project 2008
Constructing toilets and 2 classrooms for a school 25 km from Kanchipuram Total budget: Rs. 11,00,00/-
600 students and 4 toilets
Prior to 2008, the Tirupulivanam School had only 4 toilets for 600 students. These toilets had been constructed by NABAD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) but were not enough for a school that size. By 2008 the toilets were for staff use only.
Children dropping out of school due to a lack of privacy
As a result, many adolescent girls had stopped coming to school, as without adequate toilets they lacked the privacy they needed; and being children of agricultural labourers, there was no chance of home-schooling.
Building toilets and to keep students in school
It was thus to stem the increasing number of dropouts that we gathered funds and built 7 new toilets (4 for girls and 3 for boys) for the school.
Other needs of the children
Apart from the toilets, we built a multipurpose hall, which can be divided into two classrooms when necessary, and organized personal hygiene classes for the adolescent girls.
Measuring success
Our contribution succeeded in keeping more children in school, and with the headmaster’s efforts to ensure quality education the school now has a 91% pass rate - an admirable accomplishment with such limited resources.
