Inauguration of Cancer Prevention Centre, Tirunelveli
Event
On October 2, 2011, Udhavum Ullangal, Cancer Institute and Krishna Hospitals will inaugurate a Cancer Prevention Centre at Tirunelveli and present a half-day workshop on cancer prevention, screening and management. Dr. V Shanta, Chairman, Cancer Institute will deliver the inaugural address. Dr. Pushpa, Managing Director, Krishna Hospitals, will deliver the welcome address.
Purpose
Cancer. The very mention of the word creates a fear of death, with little understanding of what the disease really is. This joint initiative of Udhavum Ullangal (Chennai), Cancer Institute (Adyar) and Krishna Hospital (Tirunelveli) intends to replace this fear with a system of referral/medical/awareness services that facilitate early detection and prevention of the disease. Krishna Hospital is a tertiary care hospital for women and children in Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli. It is an ISO 9001:2008 certified hospital, recognised by the National Board of Examinations DNB (Paediatrics).
Background
Udhavum Ullangal and Cancer Institute, Adyar estimate that with the existing knowledge and resources, it is possible to prevent 50% of cancers from occurring, provided the cancers are detected in the earliest possible stages. Over 50% of cancers in men are tobacco oriented. They are due to chewing tobacco or smoking. Over 50% of cancers in women are uterine cancers. And both these groups of cancers are preventable through creating awareness that leads to early detection and a system of medical infrastructure/services that facilitate this process. Udhavum Ullangal, Cancer Institute and Krishna Hospitals, Tirunelveli aim to establish just such a system through this project, the Cancer Prevention Centre, Tirunelveli.
Action
The Cancer Prevention Centre will undertake population-based screening programmes in Tirunelveli district (Tamilnadu) where cancer care facilities are poor. The aim and objective of the Centre is to set up a permanent screening clinic, creating cancer and tobacco awareness, conduct camps and provide early detection services with trained personnel and recommend or provide necessary arrangements for treatment.
